Embracing Micro Adventures

Finding Adventure in the Everyday: Embracing Micro Adventures

Life with kids shifts your perspective. Those epic, month-long expeditions become less frequent, but the spirit of adventure doesn’t disappear. Instead, we’re discovering it in the delightful realm of micro adventures.

These are short, manageable trips that pack a surprising punch. We’re learning to savor the present, actively creating opportunities for exploration. Weekly kayaking outings have become a cherished ritual, a chance for the kids to connect with nature. We often invite friends, especially those with kayaking expertise or a helpful adult-to-child ratio, making it a safe and enjoyable experience.

Recently, I planned a kayak trip with world renowned kayaker Kate Hives, and all our kids that was cancelled last minute. However, I decided to proceed, carefully managing the risks involved. The weather cooperated beautifully, and the shallow lake, with its easy-to-navigate edges, provided a safe and engaging environment. The kids, now seasoned kayakers thanks to our consistent outings, handled it with ease. We’ve been building up their exposure to kayaking and canoeing, particularly for baby Kiah, and it’s paying off.

These micro adventures are the foundation for future, more ambitious journeys. We’re envisioning longer canoe and kayak tours, overnight adventures, with the kids. There are certainly some awesome places to have overnight adventures close to home on the Sapphire Coast NSW. Each small trip builds their confidence and our own.

Documenting these little adventures is something new for us. Should we continue to share our experiences? Let us know if you’d like to see more!
