Rise and shine, hit the beach for a morning stroll or refreshing swim and breakfast. Then, ready, set, ride! Today our adventure starts with a ride designed to warm up your legs and prepare you for days of exhilarating exploration. Our 55km journey takes us from coastal charm to the tranquil haven of Currajong Retreat, a luxury farm stay nestled in the heart of Burragate.
We will head towards the legendary Snake Track, just past the picturesque village of Kiah. This winding path traces the Towamba River, treating you to river views and forest bushland. With minimal traffic, you’ll be immersed in the serenity of nature, sunbathing goannas and the enchanting calls of lyrebirds. Feel free to pause for a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear river.
As the day progresses, we’ll follow the river bends to our evening destination: Currajong Retreat. A quintessential country experience, Currajong Retreat offers luxurious safari tents with every modern comfort. Overlooking spectacular views of rolling hills, Towamba river and mist-covered farmland the retreat is also situated on a working fine-wool Angora Goat Farm.
Indulge in delicious food shared around a crackling open fire as you recount the day’s adventures. The retreat offers a soul-enriching escape where you can truly unwind and reconnect with yourself. Though you won’t want to leave this haven of tranquillity, the open road beckons, promising new adventures in the days to come.
Take advantage of a good night’s rest, recharging both yourself and your e-bike batteries (if you have one). You’ve earned it!
A thrilling challenge awaits as we trade the gentle countryside for inclines. Prepare to test your metal to the max as you climb into the highland country and be rewarded with breathtaking views as we make our way from Burragate to Bombala.
We’ll begin by following the country roads that hug the curves of the Towamba River. Soak up the peaceful scenery and the sounds of the river, as you warm up for the main event: Big Jack Mountain Road.
This aptly named road presents a formidable ascent – steep, winding, and demanding every bit of your cycling prowess. With each section of incline, the panoramic views become more and more spectacular. Feel the sense of accomplishment as you conquer the climb and emerge at the plateau.
From there, we’ll continue our journey towards the historic town Bombala, nestled in the Monaro plains. Bombala, meaning “Meeting of the waters” in the local Aboriginal language, offers a unique opportunity to spot some of Australia’s fascinating wildlife.
If you arrive early enough, consider a visit to the Bombala Platypus Reserve, just 4.2km from the town centre. A raised platform provides excellent viewing opportunities, especially in the late afternoon or early morning when platypuses are most active. Alternatively, take a leisurely stroll along the riverside walk next to town on the Bombala River, where platypus sightings at dusk and dawn are relatively common.
Tonight, we’ll relax and refuel at a classic country pub in Bombala, devouring a well-deserved dinner and celebrating a triumphant climb. A good night’s rest awaits, allowing you to recharge both body and soul (and those e-bike batteries, if you have one!).
Early risers can seize the opportunity to witness the wonders of the Bombala River, renowned as a prime platypus-spotting location. After a satisfying breakfast at a local cafe, we’ll set off on a network of picturesque dirt roads towards Dalgety, a charming town nestled on the banks of the iconic Snowy River.
The path will take us through the heart of the Monaro Plains, where classic countryside vistas unfold. Boulder-strewn hills, rolling farmland dotted with grazing cows and sheep collide with modern wind turbines harnessing the landscapes’ abundant wind energy. While the scenery may start out evoking a sense of gentle ease, don’t be fooled – to reach the highest peak in Australia, we must climb more. This section of the tour demands more inclines, asking you to dig deep before we reach our evening destination set on the banks of the mighty Snowy River.
In Dalgety you will be transported to an understated place that retains its historic ambience, Buckley’s Crossing Hotel. Fall in a heap, into the cosy family owned and renovated 1889 pub where you can warm up with a hot meal next to the fire in the dining room and wonder through the venue taking in memorabilia and photos from years gone by.
Before settling in for a well-deserved rest and recharging for another exciting day, we encourage you to stretch your legs with a leisurely stroll to the Snowy River. Keep your eyes peeled for more platypus sightings and savour the tranquillity of this quaint country town.
Your second last day of the challenge! Today you will edge closer to your ultimate goal, Mount Kosciuszko, as we cycle towards Perisher Valley. Traversing country roads through rolling alpine plains, spectacular vistas and the majestic Snowy River, we’ll enjoy a scenic ride along the shores of Lake Jindabyne and pause for our picnic lunch.
Next, we’ll cross the Thredbo River and begin our ascent to Perisher. Once solely a winter sport wonderland, Perisher has transformed into a year-round destination, offering alpine beauty in every season. Our base camp for the next 2 nights will be Valhalla Resort in Perisher, renovated in 2023, our group will enjoy exclusive use of this beautiful lodge with the bonus of an amazing Lodge Host and Chef.
After a delicious meal you can relax in a fire lit lounge, surrounded by fellow adventurers or find a quiet cozy spot to focus your thoughts on accomplishing your last leg of this incredible challenge. Rest well and gather your strength for the final exhilarating climb to the top of the mountain tomorrow.
The moment has arrived! After a hearty breakfast and armed with packed lunches, we’ll set off on our final push to the summit of Mount Kosciuszko. We’ll cycle from Perisher to Charlotte Pass, where we then connect with the renowned Kosciuszko Summit Trail. This 18.6km route is popular with both cyclists and hikers, and fortunately, we can ride most of the way.
During the second half of the ride, we’ll pass the historic Seaman’s Hut, an emergency shelter that often proves vital when the alpine weather takes a turn – a reminder to be prepared for all conditions, even in October. With any luck, we’ll be greeted by a vibrant display of wildflowers along the way. After Seaman’s Hut, which is well worth a brief exploration. Once we reach Rawson Pass, the junction where the trail from Charlotte Pass meets the trail from Thredbo, we’ll dismount as cycling beyond this point is prohibited, both to the summit and down towards Thredbo.
Securing our bikes at the provided racks and a pause for restrooms, we will hike the final stretch, just over a kilometre, to the summit. The trail is mainly gravel, with some smooth sections. Be mindful that you might encounter lingering patches of snow, so appropriate footwear is recommended.
– HOORAY! – you’ve conquered the peak of Mount Kosciuszko! Savour the breathtaking 360-degree views and breath deep into the joy of your achievement.
Let’s go celebrate – the pace will be all leisure and pleasure from here! A short stroll back to Rawson Pass, followed by an exhilarating descent back to Charlotte Pass, then a downhill cruise back to Perisher. Back at our welcoming haven, Valhalla Resort we can raise a glass, feast and stay up late, revelling in the camaraderie – there’s no need to conserve energy tonight, as tomorrow requires only a relaxing transfer back to Canberra or Eden.
Enjoy a leisurely morning, savouring the last moments of our mountain escape. Sleep in, relax, and perhaps take a final stroll to soak in the alpine atmosphere. After a leisurely breakfast, we’ll gather mid-morning for our comfortable transfer back to Eden, bikes in tow. Reflect on the incredible journey we’ve shared, the challenges overcome, and the breathtaking beauty witnessed along the way.
We can drop you in Jinderbyne on our way back to Eden, giving you the chance to explore more! We highly recommend extending your stay to enjoy their amazing mountain biking and walking trails.
